5 Healthy Habits to Finish the Summer Strong
As summer begins to wind down, it's the perfect time to refocus on your health before the busy fall season arrives. Whether you're getting back into a routine after vacations or preparing for back-to-school schedules, now is the opportunity to reinforce healthy habits that will carry you through the rest of the year.
Remember, lasting wellness isn't about making dramatic changes overnight—it's about consistently making small choices that support your physical and mental well-being.
1. Recommit to Hydration
While the hottest days of summer may be coming to an end, your body still depends on proper hydration every day. Water supports nearly every function in your body, including regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients, supporting digestion, lubricating joints, and maintaining energy levels.
Healthy Habit: Carry a reusable water bottle and sip consistently throughout the day. If you're spending extended time outdoors or exercising vigorously, be sure to replace fluids appropriately and consider electrolytes when prolonged sweating occurs.
2. Build Every Meal Around Protein and Color
As routines become busier, it's easy to grab convenience foods that leave you hungry shortly after eating. Building meals around lean protein and colorful fruits and vegetables helps support muscle health, energy, satiety, and overall wellness.
Healthy Habit: Fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruit, one-quarter with lean protein, and one-quarter with whole grains or other high-fiber carbohydrates. Include a healthy fat such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, or seeds to create a balanced, satisfying meal.
3. Move Your Body with Purpose
Physical activity doesn't have to be intense to be effective. Consistent movement improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, reduces stress, enhances mood, and supports healthy weight management.
Healthy Habit: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, along with strength training two to three times weekly. Whether it's walking, cycling, swimming, resistance training, or simply playing outside with your family, every movement counts.
4. Prioritize Sleep and Recovery
Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for improving your health. During sleep, your body repairs tissues, balances hormones, strengthens your immune system, and prepares you for the next day. Recovery also includes giving your muscles and mind time to recharge after physical activity and life's daily demands.
Healthy Habit: Strive for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a consistent bedtime, reduce screen time before bed, and create a cool, dark, and quiet sleeping environment to promote restorative rest.
5. Prepare for a Healthy Fall Routine
August is the ideal time to establish habits that will make the transition into fall smoother. Planning ahead reduces stress and makes healthy choices easier when schedules become more demanding.
Healthy Habit: Set aside time each week to meal prep, schedule workouts, prepare healthy snacks, and organize your calendar. Having a plan in place helps you stay consistent, even during busy weeks.
August Wellness Challenge
Choose one new habit to focus on each week:

Drink enough water to stay well hydrated every day.

-
Move your body for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
-
Get 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night.
-

10 Things I would NEVER say or recommend as a Certified Nutritionist...
This month, we discuss number 3, going on a "detox" or "cleanse"
There is a lot of information today.
Read it and let it percolate...
How many times have you seen or heard about "detoxing" and "cleansing" and all the claims, outrageous or not, they make? Not to mention all the fear-mongering that goes along with it.
It's all bullshit.
Unless there is a medical reason to participate in a detox or cleanse...it's all bullshit.
Unfortunately, the bullshit that is detox and cleansing can be extremely detrimental to your health and well-being... not to mention your bank account.
As a Certified Nutritionist, I would NEVER recommend a detox or a cleanse. That being said, if there were a medical reason to need something like a colon cleansing for something like constipation, that would need to be under medical supervision by a certified medical professional.

YOU CAN'T OUT TRAIN POOR NUTRITION HABITS!
THIS APPLIES TO UTILIZING GLP-1 MEDICATIONS TOO!
Exercise, both strength training and cardio helps you be in a calorie deficit, not only daily but helps with maintaining weight loss over time.
HOWEVER, if your nutrition habits are still having you in a CALORIE SURPLUS, you will not lose weight or body fat.
But Christine, when I workout I get HUNGRY!
Yes, this is supposed to happen, and to lose weight and still fuel your body properly, you need to have your nutrition habits in line with your goals.
...if you don't, you're setting yourself up for a serious mental mind screw as well as unnecessary frustration.
Nutrition and exercise work together when it comes to weight loss, fitness, and health goals.
If one is out of whack or failing, the other will follow suit.
Hiring a nutritionist to help you understand and navigate your nutrition habits as well as holding you accountable, helps you reach your goals in a healthy, sustainable way.
The same goes for exercise and hiring a personal trainer.
Hopefully you can hire someone who is legitimately certified as both (yes we do exist)!
You can do it!
And we can help!
No bullshit.
No gimmicks.
No MLMs.
No fads.
Just information, products, and programs you can use to get real, sustainable results.
